The Agri-business Committee of the Fairmont Area Chamber offers two $4,200 scholarships each year to two Martin County graduating high school seniors who are planning to pursue a bachelors degree in an agriculture-related program. AFA Community Scholars are awarded a $3,200 academic scholarship and sponsorship to the AFA Leaders Conference.
These scholarships are made possible through a cooperative agreement with Agriculture Future of America (AFA) along with local sponsorships from Bank Midwest, Cargill, Inc., CFS, Compeer Financial, Devenish Nutrition, Dutch Creek Farms, Fairmont Veterinary Clinic, Kahler Automation, Martin County Corn & Soybean Growers, Martin County Pork Producers, Preferred Capital Management, Profinium and Valero Renewables.
Applications are accepted each year from January through mid-March. Students may APPLY ONLINE. In order to prepare for the application process, a worksheet is available HERE.
This program is successful because lives are enriched. Students selected for this opportunity continue their education and follow opportunities in the agriculture arena.
In 2016, two students were on the AFA student advisory team (elite group of 10 students that helps plan our annual Conference).
All Community Applicants (programs in 8 states):
- 2015 & 2016 -Martin County, MN had more applications than any other one county based scholarship program that AFA partners with
- 2017 – Martin County, MN had the 3rd most applicants out of all county based scholarship programs
Applicants In Minnesota:
- 2015 & 2016 – Martin County had double the amount of applicants than any other county based program in the state of Minnesota.
- 2017 – Martin County still had the most applicants out of any of other county based program in the state of Minnesota.
43% of past Martin County scholars continued their participation with AFA after the initial scholarship was received. This is high compared to other communities.
